Race results: (and reports where available)

Round 1: Monterrey (MEX), 9 March 1997

Jimmy Morales won round one of the Mexican F3000 Championship, at Monterrey. At the start, reigning champion Jaime Cordero went off after a clash with Patrick Goeters. Goeters' car hit the wall and a wishbone went through his leg. Later, Patrick's condition was reported as stable.

Then clutch problems for Rafael Martinez and Freddy van Beuren Jr wrecked the second and third start, before finally the race began and Morales took advantage of his clean side of the grid to grab the lead. Polesitter Mario Dominguez challenged and took the lead on lap five. Unfortunately an overheating engine slowed his pace and finally, Dominguez came home second, 9.264s behind Morales. Dominguez also set a new lap record in the process. Derek Higgins was third, complaining of a lack of power.

Round 2: San Luis Potosi (MEX), 6 April 1997

Derek Higgins

Derek Higgins (right) led from flag to flag to win the second round of the Mexican Formula 3000 Championship for the Quaker State team at San Luis Potosi. Third in the first round, the British driver did well to qualify on the front row after missing the first session with gearbox problems.

And he was able to lead away when pole-sitter Mario Dominguez encountered a throttle problem. Rod MacLeod was caught out by the Mexican's slow getaway and clipped his car. With a broken driveshaft, the Scot went no further. Dominguez's Herdez-Mexlub team worked hard to repair his car and he was able to continue, albeit seven laps down. Once out again, he flew, setting fastest lap for the second race in a row.

With this trouble happening in his wake, Higgins was able to open out a large gap on the first lap and was safe to dictate the pace, finishing 12.2s ahead of 1989 British Class B Formula 3 champion Fernando Plata.

Jimmy Morales, winner of the opening round, tussled with Plata but had to make do with third place and a share of the championship lead, with Freddy van Beuren Jr finishing right on his heels.

Goeters brothers Eduardo and Jorge rounded out the top six, with third brother Patrick watching from the sidelines following his accident in the opening round that left a wishbone piercing his legs. He hopes to race again in June.

Round 3: Zacatecas (MEX), 27 April 1997

Mexican driver Jimmy Morales extended his lead in Mexico's Formula 3000 Championship by dominating the third round of the series at Zacatecas to take his second win. Starting from pole, he outdragged chief rival Derek Higgins on the run to the first corner and set a rapid early pace, lapping below even his record pole time.

Higgins was relieved to be able to run cleanly to second place, as he'd crashed heavily in testing on the Friday. The British driver finished 3.8 seconds adrift, but easily clear of Mario Dominguez who, like Higgins, was complaining of a down-on-power engine.

Fernando Plata - British Class B F3 Champion in 1989 - was fourth, but he was later disqualified for having his rev limiter set 150rpm too high, handing the position to Indy Lights refugee Enrique Contreras.
